CSL Houston Frequently Asked Questions

What is a “Center for Spiritual Living”?+
Well, “Center” and “Living” are pretty clear. So, what do we mean by “spiritual”? Spiritual can be interpreted several ways, but the most relevant is that we focus on an individual’s spirit – their state of being. Are you happy? Do you anger easily? Do you withhold what you want to say or do? Do you keep seeing patterns repeating in your life that are unsatisfying? We look at how human beings shape their experience of life, and how evaluating that, and releasing parts of our thinking that don’t serve us can make our experience of life better. “Change your thinking; change your life” and “A world that works for everyone” are the two most important mantras that we have.
What makes CSL different? What do you talk about?+
While we have a church structure, and many of our discussions involve Bible teaching and the concept of God, we also discuss mistranslation of Bible verses that change the meaning. We discuss things like doubt, fear, judgment, love, and how identifying how your own thoughts, beliefs and experiences color how you experience these common human issues, and how to improve that. What we don’t talk about would include “spreading the word”/proselytizing, using guilt or fear based communication to influence your behavior vis a vis our group, that some people deserve unequal treatment, or most of the conversations that drive people away from traditional religion,
What is Science of Mind?+
Science of Mind is based on a book of the same name, first published in 1924 by Ernest Holmes. Ernest Holmes studied all religious and spiritual philosophies, and concluded that, at their core, they all rest on treating people the way you want to be yourself treated, that what you believe about yourself and the world will always color how you see events, and that those beliefs will produce your opportunities, communications and choices. Holmes focused on and clearly defined the law of cause and effect – what you believe, you will experience. Holmes wrote that the One Mind is impersonal, consistent and always provides exactly what one wishes for. This is distinct from the “prosperity gospel” that have been advanced by other organizations. If you work on your own view of yourself and the world, you will begin to have a better experience of life, even if you don’t win the lottery.
What is Scientific Prayer?+
Scientific Prayer is easily defined. Scientific means that the outcomes are consistent and predictable. Prayer is also straight forward. Taking the concept of God out of the conversation for a moment, prayer is a wish or an earnest request, according to Miriam Webster. Scientific prayer treatment is a method in which the person making the request accepts that they themselves are part of all that is created, and equal in value to everything else, then a specific request is made for a spiritual condition. If one is experiencing illness, for instance, one makes a request for a consciousness of health. If one is experiencing loneliness, one makes a request for a consciousness of love and companionship. When one develops a change in consciousness, what seem like new opportunity, new introduction, new communication will be demonstrated, and the person making the prayer treatment can engage in those new opportunities.
What is a Professional Practitioner?+
A professional practitioner is a person who is licensed by CSL’s global structure, who have studied specific Science of Mind principles for a minimum of six years, been tested both in writing and by an oral panel for proficiency in understanding the Law of Cause and Effect, and how to both create effective Scientific Prayer Treatment, and manifesting the outcomes on behalf of clients.
How do I work with a Practitioner?+
That’s easy – we have three different, experienced professional practitioners, each with more than 20 years experience post-licensing. You can request a consultation with any of the three, and see which is the best fit for your personality. Professional practitioners do charge a fee for their service, and that fee is established by the practitioner. A couple of very famous names who started as professional practitioners would include Louise Hay, Dr. Wayne Dyer and Marianne Williamson.
